Personal statement

Sam Wilkins is a filmmaker, moving‑image artist, and researcher working across film, visual effects, performance, and contemporary art practice. At ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿, he serves as Programme Lead for Film, Television and Digital Production and co‑leads the Art and Technology Research Group.

His research is in intermedial studies, integrating painting, performance, video, and animation to produce layered moving‑image works. It examines how creative practice can reconfigure understandings of landscape, ritual/customs, and cultural identity, particularly in the context of environmental change. Drawing on landscape studies, folklore, and moving‑image theory, his work reframes sites, especially energy infrastructures, as culturally embedded and narratively complex environments rather than purely technical systems.

Alongside his academic work, Sam maintains a professional practice across the screen and creative industries, with clients including NHS, Kia Cars, Glyndebourne Opera House, Bristol Old Vic, Hadley and Mute Records.

Teaching is central to Sam’s work. He is passionate about supporting students to develop industry-ready skills alongside a strong creative voice.
