Personal statement
Dr Conrad Moriarty-Cole is a philosopher and cultural theorist whose work addresses the political and ontological stakes of artificial intelligence and computational culture. Drawing on traditions of phenomenology and process thought, his research develops a post-phenomenological metaphysics of technology that interrogates how digital systems reshape the conditions of meaning and subjectivity.
He is currently completing a monograph that critically reconstructs these philosophical inheritances to theorise the relationship between technics, nature, and society under conditions of contemporary AI. His published work extends into decolonial thought and software studies.
Alongside the monograph, Conrad is pursuing several active funded research projects. He is currently working in the Stafford Beer Archives, researching Beer’s work in the 1960s and 1970s, a period including experimental approaches to computing (pond brains and cybernetic fabrics), at the same time as developing computing policies for large companies. Together, these two strands of Beer's work will inform the construction of a critical framework for the study of organisational design and institutional responses to generative AI.
Conrad is also leading a research impact project with the Woodcraft Folk developing AI literacy with young people. A third funded strand, conducted collaboratively with colleagues and students, investigates critical pedagogy and inclusivity in higher education, with particular attention to affective engagement and critical institutional mapping.
Pedagogy is central to Conrad's academic identity. As Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for BA Media Communications at ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿'s School of Creative and Cultural Arts, he brings his theoretical commitments directly into teaching, treating the classroom as a site of critical inquiry in its own right. He has taught at postgraduate level throughout his career, including Programme Lead for the MA Digital Culture at Brighton.
Previously he held posts in Digital Culture at the University of Brighton, Digital Humanities at King's College London, and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths College, where he also completed his PhD.
Outside academia, he serves as Chair of the Board of Directors at the Centre for Progressive Change, a not-for-profit organisation focused on building progressive national organising campaigns.
Conrad welcomes inquiries from prospective PhD students working in areas related to his research.
