From PGCE student to Reception teacher: Liv Hellewell's journey

Tuesday, 18 August, 2026

For PGCE Primary and Early Years student Liv Hellewell, becoming a teacher had always been the goal.

Having recently secured a position as a Reception class teacher starting in September, Liv reflects on the experiences throughout her PGCE year that helped prepare her for a career in the classroom.

Growing up in a family of teachers, she saw first-hand the positive difference they could make in children's lives.

"I've always known how important teachers can be in a child's life, especially for children who need a little extra support and encouragement.

I want to be the kind of teacher who creates a nurturing environment for all children, but particularly for those who need someone to believe in them and help them thrive."

After completing her undergraduate degree here at BSU, Liv chose to continue her studies with the Primary and Early Years PGCE, specialising in the 3–7 age phase, where she gained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

"I already knew how much I enjoyed studying here. I love the campus, the community feel and the support available to students.

Friends who had completed the PGCE also spoke really positively about the balance between university learning and school placements. Combined with my own experience at BSU, it felt like the natural choice."

Throughout the course, Liv divided her time between learning at our Sion Hill campus and school placements, gradually taking on more responsibility in the classroom as the year progressed.

"Towards the end of the course, I was teaching 80% of the timetable, so I effectively took on the role of the class teacher for most of the week.

I planned and delivered lessons, assessed children's learning and discussed their progress with my mentor. It gave me the opportunity to experience the realities of classroom teaching while still having support."

Liv’s confidence that teaching was the right career for her has grown gradually, shaped by the progress she has seen in her pupils and the support of those around her.

She explained:

"The more responsibility I've taken on and the more time I've spent in the classroom, the more certain I've become that teaching is the right career for me.

Seeing children develop over time, academically, socially and emotionally, has been incredibly rewarding. I've also valued the encouraging feedback from mentors, teachers and university tutors, which has helped me believe in my abilities as a teacher."

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching for Liv has been the relationships she has built with the children in her class.

"It's particularly special when a child begins to believe in themselves after finding something difficult.

Building relationships with children over the course of the year has been one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Knowing they feel safe, supported and comfortable coming to you reminds me of why I wanted to become a teacher."

Looking ahead to September, she is excited to begin her career as a Reception class teacher.

"I'm excited to continue developing my practice, building on everything I've learned during my PGCE as I begin my career as an Early Career Teacher (ECT).

And who knows, I may well find myself back at ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ in the future to complete a Master's in Education."

Reflecting on her time at ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿, Liv encourages anyone considering a PGCE course to make the most of every opportunity.

"Be prepared to work hard, stay organised and make the most of every opportunity to learn, but also enjoy it. It's a fast-paced year, but it's also incredibly rewarding and full of moments that really confirm you're in the right place.

Ask questions, speak up in seminars, seek feedback and don't be afraid to make mistakes, as they are a key part of developing as a teacher.

I've loved spending time in the classroom, building relationships with children and seeing their progress. If you stay open to learning and push through the more challenging moments, it will all be worth it."
