Monday, 12 October, 2026

Professor Georgina Andrews, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿, has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset.

The honorary appointment, made by the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, is effective from Thursday 8 October 2026.

Deputy Lieutenants support the Lord-Lieutenant in representing the Crown and play an important role in promoting and encouraging voluntary and charitable organisations and recognising the contribution of individuals, organisations and communities across the county.

Professor Andrews has been Vice-Chancellor of ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ since January 2025. She is passionate about breaking down barriers to education and believes strongly in the role universities can play as anchor institutions within their communities and as catalysts for inclusive growth.

Professor Andrews is also a champion and supporter of local voluntary sector organisations, recognising the vital, and often unseen, contribution they make to communities across Somerset. She also has extensive experience of external engagement and Non-Executive Director roles and has lived in Keynsham with her family since 2015.

Professor Georgina Andrews, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿, said:

“I am deeply honoured to be appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset. Having lived in Keynsham for more than a decade, Somerset is very much home, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to help promote the voluntary and charitable sector and to contribute further to the life of the county.

“ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿'s new Strategy 2035, developed under my leadership, reaffirms our commitment to the communities that we serve, not only through education, knowledge exchange and research, but by helping to create opportunity, support inclusive growth and strengthen the civic and cultural life of the region.

“I look forward to working with the Lord-Lieutenant and fellow Deputy Lieutenants, and to meeting and supporting the many people and organisations whose work makes such a difference across Somerset, including those nominated for the Kings Award for Voluntary Service.”

ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ is committed to strengthening its role as an anchor institution in the region, working with partners across Somerset and the wider South West to break down barriers to opportunity, to support communities, and to contribute to economic, social and cultural development.
