Why commuting to ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ could be the right choice for you
Friday, 7 August, 2026For many students, university life doesn't always mean moving away from home. Whether it's to save money, stay close to family, or simply because they live within travelling distance, commuting has become an increasingly popular option.
Here at ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿, commuting offers students the opportunity to enjoy everything university has to offer while maintaining the familiarity and support of home. With campuses well connected by public transport and a growing community of commuter students, balancing study, work and home life can be more achievable than many students expect.
For some members of the University's staff, commuting is more than just a practical option – it's something they've experienced themselves.
Molly Worth, who graduated in 2025 with a degree in Business and Management (Marketing), and now works at BSU, says:
"I chose to commute for my final two years at Bath Spa because it helped me save money, and it was definitely the right decision for me. I still made the most of my time at university, spending time on campus, making friends and getting involved where I could. Commuting didn't stop me from having a great university experience, and I'd encourage anyone considering it not to see it as a barrier."
Fellow Bath Spa graduate Rory Langsbury, who graduated with a degree in Journalism and Publishing in 2025 and also works at BSU, also commuted throughout his studies and understands both the challenges and rewards that come with travelling to campus:
"Being a slightly older student really impacted my decision. For me, I had my whole life, job and friendship group in Swindon, so living in Bath simply wasn't an option. Being able to not completely uproot my life, yet still get the full university experience, was ideal.
I was able to continue working my job at reduced hours, which ultimately led to me being able to save to buy my first house alongside my studies, and I was still able to get fully involved with lectures, trips away, and collaborating with my classmates, just as a non-commuting student would."
While commuting can require a little more planning, many students find it allows them to build independence in different ways. Managing travel, organising study time and making the most of time on campus are all skills that can help students thrive throughout their degree.

Commuter students are encouraged to make use of the University's social spaces, libraries and student support services, helping them stay connected with classmates beyond lectures. From joining societies to attending events between classes, there are plenty of opportunities to become part of the Bath Spa community, regardless of where you live.
Commuting shouldn't be seen as missing out on the university experience. Instead, it can offer the flexibility to enjoy the best of both worlds – earning a degree while staying connected to home, reducing living costs and building a university experience that works for you.
There is no one-size-fits-all university journey. Whether you're moving into halls or travelling to campus each day, ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ is committed to helping every student feel part of its welcoming community from day one.
